C-130 plane crash victim suffers same fate as father who also died in 1993 plane crash

MANILA, Philippines – One of the victims of the C-130 aircraft that crashed in Sulu suffered the same fate as his father who also died in a similar incident nearly thirty years ago.

Technical Sergeant Donald Badoy, a 31-year-old flight engineer from Lapu-lapu, Cebu, was among the 53 fatalities in the tragic plane crash dubbed as the Philippine’s worst military air accident in thirty years. His father, who also served as a flight engineer, also died in a C-130 plane crash in 1993 that took thirty lives.

"Masakit talaga, napakasakit kasi bata pa. At saka maliliit pa ang dalawang mga anak niya, Pero wala tayong magagawa. Kung tayo lang ang magpasya, hindi pa sana, kasi maliliit pa [ang mga anak]. Pero merong humahawak sa atin. So tanggapin na lang natin ang lahat," Merlie said.

On Sunday, July 4, a C-130 aircraft carrying 96 people, mostly recently graduated troops, overshot a runway at Jolo airport in Sulu before it crashed and burst into flames.

Fifty-three individuals including three civilians died from the crash while 49 soldiers sustained injuries.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman Major Gen Edgard Arevalo said that the military plane, previously used by the US Air Force and was handed to the Philippines in January, was in “very good condition” and still had 11,000 flying hours remaining before its next scheduled maintenance.

"We are determined to find out what really transpired in this very tragic incident, because according to available information the aircraft followed the specified protocols,” Arevalo said in a news conference.
