On Twitter, Pia expressed her surprise when she woke up to a flood of angry tweets from Vietnam netizens. Pia tweeted, "Woah! Woke up to so many angry fans from Vietnam! I think some of you misunderstood my tweet last night! I didn't mean any harm by it at all! #MissUniverse #MissUniverseVietnam."

The issue stemmed from Pia's earlier tweet about Miss Vietnam winning the Top 21's Fan Vote of the 69th Miss Universe pageant. Pia said she was surprised that Vietnam beat the Philippines in the most number of pageant fans.

"Mas maraming pageant fans sa Vietnam kesa sa Pilipinas? 🤯🤯 #MissUniverse," she tweeted.

The tweet offended many Vietnam fans who accused Pia of belittling their Miss Universe bet and their country as well.

Pia explained her side and tweeted, "For years I was told (and I believed) that the Philippines had the most pageant fans in the world. But yesterday Vietnam got the highest votes in history! Which meant I was wrong. Which surprised me! That's it!! That's all I meant by my tweet!"

The beauty queen further clarified that she meant no harm at all and extended her congratulations to Vietnam.

"I wasn't being sarcastic or questioning your win at all! Hope this clears it up 🙏 Congratulations Vietnam for the highest votes in Miss Universe history! #MissUniverse #MissUniverseVietnam," Pia explained.
