Duterte announces quarantine classifications for June 2021

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, May 31, 2021, approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to extend the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) status of the National Capital Region (NCR), Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal or NCR Plus from June 1 to 15, 2021.

Some restrictions, however, shall still be in place in NCR Plus limiting the capacities of certain industries.

Also under GCQ status for the whole month of June are:
  • CAR: Baguio City, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Abra
  • Region 2: Isabela, Nueva Viscaya, Quirino
  • Region 4A: Batangas, Quezon
  • Region 10: Iligan City
  • Region 11: Davao City
  • BARMM: Lanao del Sur, Cotabato City  

These areas shall be placed under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) from June 1 to 15, 2021:
  • Region 2: City of Santiago, Cagayan
  • CAR: Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao
  • Region 4B: Puerto Princesa City
  • Region 6: Iloilo City
  • Region 9: Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte
  • Region 10: Cagayan de Oro City
  • CARAGA: Butuan City, Agusan del Sur

All other areas shall be placed under Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) until month’s end.

Earlier, the Octa Research group have recommended to extend the GCQ status of NCR Plus in June.

"While we believe that we can relax restrictions, we think we should try to retain the GCQ at this time because the cases are still significant," Guido David said.

Experts observe a decline of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila, with more than 1,000 cases per day and the reproduction number declining to 0.53.

While there is a downward trend in cases in Metro Manila, the task force observed an upward trend in many areas in the country.

“In Batangas and Pampanga, COVID cases are increasing, including the attack rate. At present, our situation in Metro Manila is improving but we noticed a spike in COVID cases in the provinces, including Mindanao and Visayas,” National Task Force Against COVID-19 Chief Implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez, Jr. said.

“Cases are increasing in Regions VI, IX, X, XI, and also Palawan in the past days,” he added.

As of Monday, May 31, the Department of Health logged 6,684 new cases of COVID-19, 6,098 new recoveries and 107 new fatalities. The Philippines now has 1,230,301 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 1,155,045 recoveries and 20,966 deaths. Of the total, 54,290 are active cases or people who are currently sick.
