Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits South of the Kermadec Islands

MANILA, Philippines – A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit South of the Kermadec Islands Thursday, June 18, has sparked fears of a tsunami.

Pacific Tsunami warning and mitigation system said: “Hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts."

Kermadec Islands are a subtropical island arc in the South Pacific Ocean 800–1,000 km northeast of New Zealand's North Island.

National Emergency Management Agency of New Zealand is now assessing if the quake that occured 12:49:52 GMT (08:50 PM Philippine Standard Time) has created a tsunami.

"We are assessing whether the M7.4 SOUTH OF THE KERMADEC ISLANDS earthquake has created a tsunami that could affect New Zealand.

We will provide an update as soon as the initial assessment has been completed."


Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said there's no destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data.

"This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," the agency said.
