Manila to give monthly allowance to 12th graders, PWDs, solo parents, seniors

MANILA, Philippines – Qualified residents of the City of Manila are in for a treat as they will soon be receiving monthly allowance from the local government.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno signed his first two official ordinances on July 25. Those measures will provide a monthly stipend to 12th graders, Persons with Disabilities (PWD), solo parents and senior citizens.

According to Moreno, the program is part of the administration's social amelioration package.

"This is what we call the social amelioration stimulus program. P1 billion ang aming ilalaan sa programang ito," he said.

The City Ordinance No. 8564 mandates that the local government will give Grade 12 students enrolled in public schools a P500 monthly allowance.

To qualify for the allowance, the 12th Grader must maintain a good standing in school. The student must also be a registered voter. But if the student is still not qualified to be a voter, he/she must be represented by a legal guardian who is a registered voter.

For senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities (PWD), they can also expect to receive a P500 stipend following City Ordinance No. 8565. To qualify, they must be bonafide residents and registered voters of Manila.

Senior citizens also need to be at least 60 years of age and is included in the master list of the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs - Manila Office. Solo parents and PWD must also be included in the master list of the local Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
