Duterte said that it is now time to pass a new Salary Standardization Law (SSL) that will heed to the continued calls for salary increase. He urged the Congress to hasten the passing of the said law.

The President also specifically addressed the public school teachers that the increase may not be that big but will help them through.

Duterte said, "To the teachers who toil and work tirelessly to educate our young, kasali na po dito ‘yung hinihingi niyo. Hindi masyadong malaki pero it will tide you over."

The current SSL passed by former president Benigno Aquino III will end this year.

The calls for salary increase of public school teachers have been on going, ever since the president significantly increased the wages of uniformed personnel.

As early as July 1, several bills have been filed in the Congress to answer the call.

Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara wants public school teachers to start a Salary Grade 19 and receive at least P36,409 monthly.

Senator Francis Pangilinan's bill seeks to add a compensation of about P10,000 per month to the teachers' salary.

Senator Nancy Binay's version wants to increase the salaries of teachers and non-teaching personnel to P28,000 and P16,000, respectively and additional "educational assistance."

Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has assured the teachers that the president is committed to his campaign promise of teachers' wage hike.
