At least 8 dead in Batanes twin earthquakes

MANILA, Philippines – At least 8 people were killed while 60 others were hurt in series of Batanes earthquakes on Saturday morning, July 27.

Authorities said the twin earthquakes – magnitude 5.4 at 4:16 am and magnitude 5.9 at 7:37 am – caused damage to homes and structures.

The first quake struck Itbayat island with depth of 12 kilometers and tectonic in origin, bulletin from Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Intensity III - Basco and Sabtang, Batanes


Instrumental Intensity:

Intensity III - Basco, Batanes

Stronger magnitude 5.9 (initially placed at magnitude 6.4) was recorded past 7 am. It has depth of 43 kilometers with location near Itbayat.

Reported Intensities:

Intensity IV - Basco, Batanes

Instrumental Intensity:

Intensity IV - Basco, Batanes

At 9:24 am, another quake with Magnitude 5.4 hit the island.


No tsunami alerts were issued but aftershocks are expected.
