Soberano was expected to portray what was described as the “millennial Darna” but due to medical reason, she couldn't portray the role anymore. Speaking in an interview with MJ Felipe, Soberano looked emotional as she explained the injury she endured while on the set of “Bagani.”

The actress fractured her right index finger while on filming the fantaserye. The bones of her finger crushed, limiting her actions and ultimately her stunt training.

Soberano said, “I’ve been undergoing therapy. I had surgery twice na po. We’ve been trying to fix it, but lately, these past few weeks, we’ve decided na maybe it’s best if I don’t push through with it, because baka maging hindrance lang po siya for me to be able to do the stunts properly.”

The limitations caused by the injury has made the actress lost her confidence. Soberano said, “It’s a hindrance for me being able to be confident in doing the scenes na alam kong may hesitations ako when doing it, because I have to take care of the finger.”

The 21-year-old actress said that there was a huge difference on what she could do before the injury happened. She was hopeful but knew she was facing a hindrance she can't fix.

Soberano said, “I couldn’t do my stunt trainings because we had to take care of the finger. Of course, we were still hoping that I would be able to do the project, pero because of the injury, I couldn’t do my stunts. So how would I be able to practice and ready myself as well?”

The Alone/Together star, who is set to undergo a third surgery on her fractured finger said that before the injury, she was really determined to portray the iconic role.

Soberano said, “I really wanted to do ‘Darna.’ I invested so much time, so much effort. Physically, I felt like I was ready before the incident. I don’t want the project to suffer just because I don’t feel like I could give Darna the justice she deserves. Emotionally, that’s why I decided to withdraw from the project. I felt like hindi ako buo anymore to do ‘Darna.’

“I was scared na I wouldn’t look as good doing my stunts because of the way my finger looks, and I’m not sure na babalik siya sa dati, na I would be able to make a fist. Of course I wanted to give my management, my bosses, my best Darna that they could possibly have. But I kind of felt insecure about it na rin,” the actress added.

Soberano was grateful that her manager Ogie Diaz and the ABS-CBN executives accepted her decision and even reassured her that she's well supported.

“Akala ko if I backed out of ‘Darna,’ I wouldn’t have a job anymore. They told me na just because I’m not doing ‘Darna’ anymore, doesn’t mean I’m any less of an artist to them,’” she said.

Soberano already started filming for Darna as early as July 2018 with then director Erik Matti. When Matti backed out due to creative differences, director Jerrold Tarog was chosen to take over.

Soberano tried to keep her emotions still but when asked for a message to her fans, she cried as she apologized. She said, “I just want to say sorry to them that I let them down.” She asked the interview to be cut after struggling to continue her message.

Soberano was chosen for Darna role in May 2017, replacing Angel Locsin, who also bowed out due to health reasons.
