It was supposed to be the happiest, most special day of his life but one fireman decided to leave his own wedding to save a family from a house fire; he has been hailed a hero for his actions.

Jeremy Bourasa, 39, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, is a firefighter who recently made waves online for leaving his new wife, 32-year-old Krista Boland, at their wedding because there had been a family in need of his heroic service.

The couple had decided to get married at St. Paul Park Fire Department where Jeremy worked. It was certainly a unique wedding venue; though the couple worried a bit about what they would do if a call came in that there was a fire somewhere that Jeremy and his co-workers need to attend to.

They even joked about it. Little did they know that it would actually happen during the wedding.

The wedding ceremony had just been completed but the reception has not started yet when the call came in.

The newlyweds were enjoying the photoshoot with their entourage and wedding photographer December Orpen when the call came in, asking help for a family home that was burning just a few miles away.

“At first I looked at him like, ‘No, don’t even think about it,’ and he wasn’t going to think about it. But then, we were taking a couple more pictures and I could actually hear how bad the fire was. It was the city next to us that needed help, so it was an ‘all-call,’ where they call for extra men,” the bride told reporters.

Understanding that a family out there needed all the help they could to save their home and their lives, Krista finally let her groom go.

Jeremy quickly changed from his wedding get-up to his fireman’s outfit – and that wasn’t really difficult to do because the wedding was taking place in the fire station and he had his gear ready there.

As quickly as they could, the team left in the same fire truck that had carried Jeremy and his bride just a few hours ago. The two had dramatically arrived at the fire station but the groom’s dramatic ‘getaway’ was more intense because he and the team were on their way to a real fire!

It was a good thing that no one was seriously injured in the house fire but the bride had to spend the wedding reception on her own. While Jeremy was hailed a hero for his actions, Krista also earned praise for staying calm and letting her husband do his duty. She even prayed for him and for firefighters as she and the guests proceeded with the reception.

Asked why she let her husband do it, Krista admitted that aside from knowing that this was part and parcel of her husband’s job, she had actually experienced firsthand what it was like to lose family members to fire.

Three years ago, her sister’s house burned to the ground but the saddest situation happened a year later when she lost a niece and nephew to another house fire. It was after this happened that Jeremy decided to become a firefighter!
