Bagyong Queenie enters PAR, threatens northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon "Kong-Rey" has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and was locally named "Queenie", state weather bureau PAGASA announced on Monday afternoon, October 1.

Bagyong Queenie, the 17th tropical cyclone to hit the country this year was not expected to make landfall but was seen to hover close to Luzon's northern tip, like typhoon Paeng, PAGASA said.

At 4:00 pm today, the eye of Typhoon Queenie was located based on all available data at 1,385 km East of Casiguran, Aurora.

Typhoon Quennie has maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph. The weather disturbance is moving Northwest at 15 kph.

No tropical cyclone warning signal raised as of press time.

"Queenie" is expected to intensify further and will move West-Northwest to Northwest towards Southern Japan.

Light to at times moderate rains over Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Aurora was also expected until Thursday (October 3).

Meanwhile, "Queenie" was expected to exit PAR by Friday afternoon (October 4).
