MANILA, Philippines – A wedding reception in Marikina was filled with screams when a tornado suddenly crashed the party on September 14.

On Facebook, Von Eric Espina captured the moment when the joyous wedding day turned into a chilling scene. The bride and the groom can be seen happily enjoying the party at Kapitan Moy Heritage House when a sudden thunderous sound was heard.

The loud crackle sent everyone screaming. Everyone started panicking when a blackout made things worse. The strong gusts of wind can be heard as lightning continued. When the tornado finally passed, Kapitan Moy the 200-year old house of Don Laureano Guevarra, known as the founder of the Marikina shoe industry, had its windows ravaged and part of its roof ripped off.

Tornado in Marikina

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro confirmed that a tornado spanning 1- kilometer radius hit the villages of San Roque and Sta. Elena last Friday.

Aside from Kapitan Moy, several more establishments were also damaged such as the Our Lady of the Abandoned Church, Otto Shoes Building, and Marikina’s Shoe Museum. The Marikina Cultural Center had its entire roof ripped off.

The tornado also uprooted at least two century-old acacia trees and hit at least twenty homes.

At least eight villages lost their electricity after transmission lines fell during the incident. Two individuals, identified to be Paul John Campos and Janet Juanzo were rushed to the hospital after being electrocuted due to fallen transmission lines. Mayor Teodoro confirmed that the two victims are now “stable.”
