PAGASA: 'Bagyong Ompong' makes landfall in Baggao, Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines – 'Bagyong Ompong' (international name: Mangkhut) has made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan at 1:40 am, September 15, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 2:00 am update.

At 1:00 am today, the eye of Typhoon Ompong was located based Aparri radar and other available data at 90 km East Northeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (17.9 °N, 122.5 °E ).

'Bagyong Ompong' has maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 285 kph. It is moving West Northwest at 35 kph.


Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal no. 4 (Winds of greater than 171 kph up to 220 kph may be expected in at least 12 hours) was raised in seven (7) areas:
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Cagayan
  • northern Isabela
  • Apayao
  • Abra
  • Kalinga
  • Babuyan Group of Islands

Impact of the Wind
  • Coconut plantation may suffer extensive damage.
  • Many large trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn plantation may suffer severe losses.
  • Most residential and institutional buildings of mixed construction may be severely damaged.
  • Electrical power distribution and communication services may be severely disrupted.
  • In the overall, damage to affected communities can be very heavy.

Signal no. 3 is up over these areas (Winds of greater than 121 kph up to 170 kph may be expected in at least 18 hours):
  • Batanes
  • southern Isabela
  • Ilocos Sur
  • La Union
  • Mountain Province
  • Benguet
  • Ifugao
  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • Quirino
  • Northern Aurora

Impact of the Wind
  • Many coconut trees may be broken or destroyed.
  • Almost all banana plants may be downed and a large number of trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn crops may suffer heavy losses.
  • Majority of all nipa and cogon houses may be unroofed or destroyed and there may be considerable damage to structures of light to medium construction.
  • There may be widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.
  • In general, moderate to heavy damage may be experienced, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.

Signal no. 2 over these areas (Winds of greater than 61 kph and up to 120 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours):
  • Pangasinan
  • Tarlac
  • Nueva Ecija
  • southern Aurora
  • Zambales
  • Pampanga
  • Bulacan
  • Northern Quezon incl. Polillo Is.

Impact of the Wind
  • Some coconut trees may be tilted with few others broken.
  • Few big trees may be uprooted.
  • Many banana plants may be downed.
  • Rice and corn may be adversely affected.
  • Large number of nipa and cogon houses may be partially or totally unroofed.
  • Some old galvanized iron roofings may be peeled off.
  • In general, the winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed communities.

And, Signal no. 1 for these areas (Winds of 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours):
  • Bataan
  • Rizal
  • Metro Manila
  • Cavite
  • Batangas
  • Laguna
  • Rest of Quezon
  • Lubang Is.
  • Marinduque
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Catanduanes
  • Albay
  • Burias Island

Impact of the Wind
  • Twigs and branches of small trees may be broken.
  • Some banana plants may be tilted or downed.
  • Some houses of very light materials (nipa and cogon) may be partially unroofed.
  • Unless this warning signal is upgraded during the entire existence of the tropical cyclone, only very light or no damage at all may be sustained by the exposed communities.
  • Rice crop, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) enhanced by the typhoon will bring gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains over Visayas, while scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains over Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and Caraga.

Residents in these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and to continue monitoring for updates.

Possible Storm surge height in surge prone areas: up to 6 meters in Cagayan and Ilocos Norte; up to 3 meters in Isabela; up to 2 meters in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of areas with TCWS and the seaboards of Visayas and of Mindanao.
