MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine women’s volleyball team returned to Asian Games after 36 years but Thailand welcomed the Filipinos with a 3 sets to none, 25-22, 25-12, 25-15, blowout loss on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Former college standouts, and now pros, team Philippines led by Alyssa Valdez didn’t look like newcomers at all as they pummeled team Thailand in the early phase of the opening set.
The Southeast Asian powerhouse came back after a sloppy start and made their living from quick plays that rattled the Filipinos and forced Coach Shaq Delos Santos to call a ceasefire.
Thailand finally took the lead 16-15 after figuring out how to stop Jaja Santiago and Alyssa Valdez’s attacks.
Philippines got back through the initiatives of Aby Maraño and Kim Kianna Dy but failed to close the opener in their favor.
Thailand, after being downed by 7 completed its comeback to win first set, 25-22.
The Thais now know that the Filipinos shouldn’t be taken lightly so they intensified their offense as they started the second set.
The Nationals skipped the opening parade yesterday just to prepare for this game. But it seemed that they needed more time to handle team Thailand properly.
