Bongbong admits he is ‘ready for presidency’ and to return ‘good governance’

MANILA, Philippines – Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr admitted that he is now ready to take the presidency and promised that the country will experience the return of “good governance.”

The son of former President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has set his eyes on the highest political seat in the country. President Duterte recently commented that he will step down if Marcos or Senator Chiz Escudero succeed him.

During a press conference last Friday, Bongbong tried to brush off the comment and said, “I think the President is doing all of this tongue-in-cheek. I wouldn't take it so seriously, kasi I think he knows kailangan pa rin siyang maging pangulo at marami pang inaasahan sa kanya ang taumbayan.”

Bongbong laughed off the President’s comment, “Pine-playtime lang tayo ni Presidente.”

But the young Marcos got serious when it came to the possibility of him leading the country. When asked the top three priorities of his possible administration, Bongbong made it clear and simple: “good governance.”

Bongbong explained, “Hindi na kailangan magsabi ng top three, we just have to return to good governance. Government has to return to a culture of service and not corruption. Kapag nagawa mo iyan, everything will follow.”

Bongbong also reiterated that his administration will focus on consumer interest to help drive the economy. He stressed, “We need more macro approach to the economy yet micro approach may help government earn more. It cannot be all revenue side.”

Last month, Bongbong already confirmed during an interview with the Financial Times that he is seriously eyeing the Philippine presidency. He confirmed, “My career is politics, and, of course, you aspire to as high a stature within your chosen field as you can achieve — and that would be president in my case."

He added, “In my father’s administration, I kept hearing ‘nation-building’, and I do not hear that phrase any more. It’s more politicking than nation-building."

Bongbong also asserted that corruption allegation against his later father’s administration were not proven. He said, "None of the cases that were filed against us have been won."

Supreme Court junks ill-gotten case vs Marcos

In June, the Supreme Court affirmed the Sandiganbayan’s August 2010 and 2011 dismissal of a civil suit on the alleged ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos and their cronies.

The Supreme Court decision said that the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), “failed to prove the respondents by themselves or in lawful concert with one another, accumulated or participated in the accumulation of ill-gotten wealth insofar as the specific allegations in the subject complaint are concerned.”
