MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court (SC) hailed the 2017 bar exam topnotchers after the special en banc session on Thursday, April 26.

Committee Chairman Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin announced the results together with the list of successful examinees of the 116th bar exam.

UPDATE: University of St. La Salle (USLS) - Bacolod graduate Mark John Simondo tops the bar with an average of 91.0500%.

A total of 7,227 law graduates tried to hurdle the 2017 bar exam, the most prestigious professional licensure exam in the country. The series of tests were administered on November 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Espana, Manila.

PREVIOUS EXAMINATION

In the 2016 bar exam, all topnotchers came from the provincial law schools, a first without the usual top-performing NCR-based schools. University of San Carlos' Karen Mae Calam aced the bar with a rating of 89.05%. A record-breaking 59.06% passing rate was hit, 3,747 out of 6,344 passed.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law alum Rachel Angeli B. Miranda topped the 2015 Bar Examinations with a rating of 87.40%. A total of 1,731 out of the 6,605 (26.21%) passed the bar.

In 2014 bar exam, Irene Mae Alcobilla, graduate of San Beda College of Law Manila aced the bar with 85.50% grade. SC named 1,126 out of 5,984 who passed the exams.

BAR EXAM OVERVIEW

Bar exam is also the only licensure examination not administered by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). The 2016 edition had 100% essay-type questions based on bulletin about guide and rules of conduct of bar examinations posted on SC website.

The examination covered the following topics and their associated subtopics, popularly known as the bar subjects: Political Law and Public International Law, Labor and Social Legislation, Civil Law, Taxation, Mercantile Law, Criminal Law, Remedial law and Legal and Judicial Ethics.
