Robredo vs Marcos: VP manual vote recount begins

After claims of “massive cheating” in the May 2016 elections, former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. is thrilled that PET will finally begin the recount. Marcos lost against Vice-President Leni Robredo by around 260,000 votes.

The manual recount will start at provinces of Camarines Sur, Negros Oriental and Iloilo, which are the bailiwicks of Robredo and the pilot areas of Marcos’ protest.

Ma. Carina Cunanan, head of the Property Division and PET Ad Hoc Committee member, confirmed that security will be tight with members from Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard and Police Security Protection Group securing the venue.

Alleged cheating

Former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. had been consistent with his claims that he lost his VP bid due to massive cheating and irregularities during the last election.

Marcos claimed that Robredo’s camp manipulated the voting machines to ensure that Robredo would win. He presented a soft copy of ballots where instead of the usual ovals, "mysterious squares" appear where voters were asked to shade.

Another ballot also showed that one voter shaded 3 Vice Presidential candidates but instead of the machine declaring it as void, Marcos claimed the vote went to Robredo.

Marcos dared VP Robredo that the two of them withdraw their pending petitions to finally allow the recount to begin.

“Fake Proof”

Vice President Leni Robredo accepted Marcos’ dare and signed last week the joint motion to withdraw all pending motions and petitions before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.

Romulo Macalintal, the lead counsel of Robredo, called Marcos’ dare as a “bluff” stating that the VP has no pending motions in PET. He said, “This is to confirm that we are not causing the delay in the recount of ballots. It is Mr. Marcos’ raising of baseless allegations and irrelevant issues that is causing the delay in the recount.”

Robredo’s camp insisted that Marcos’ evidences were “highly ridiculous if not outright frivolous.” They called the presented ballots as “fake and fabricated” and asked the Commission of Elections to investigate on it.
