"We're just waiting for our brother [eldest son, coming from San Francisco] to come here by tonight,” he said.

Earlier Monday, Maceda family spokesman Jimmy Policarpio announced that Maceda passed away at around 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Medical Center. Maceda suffered from a mild stoke two days ago while recovering from a gallbladder surgery.

“Kanina nilagyan siya ng pacemaker. Hindi yata nakayanan kaya nangyari ang hindi inaasahan,” Policarpio said.

( A pacemaker was put on him a while ago. Apparently, his body couldn’t tolerate it so the unexpected happened.)

Policarpio, who asked for the privacy of the Maceda family, believes that the veteran lawmaker’s health was hugely affected by his participation in the last elections in which he supported his son’s candidacy.

Also known as “Mr. Expose”, Maceda is best known for exposing government anomalies and other controversial issues including the PEA-Amari scam and the so-called “Brunei Beauties”.

He was also the Philippine ambassador to the United States from 1998 to 2001 under President Joseph Estrada’s term.
