Maceda's daughter-in-law Rica Vergara-Maceda said he has died at 8:58pm.

The former Senator slipped into a coma on Sunday, but was revived. However, he lost oxygen on Monday.

Earlier Monday, Maceda family spokesman Jimmy Policarpio announced that Maceda passed away at around 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Medical Center. However, Maceda's son Ernest has denied the bad news on Monday afternoon but added that they “are not expecting miracles.”

"We're just waiting for our brother [eldest son, coming from San Francisco] to come here by tonight,” Ernest said.

Also known as “Mr. Expose,” Maceda is best known for exposing government anomalies and other controversial issues including the PEA-Amari scam and the so-called “Brunei Beauties”.

Born in Pagsanjan, Laguna on March 26, 1935, He served for 3 Senate terms and became the Presidential Assistant on Community Development, Chairman of the Commission on Reorganization, Secretary of Commerce and Industry, and Executive Secretary under President Ferdinand Marcos’ administration as well as the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources during President Corazon Aquino’s term. He was also the Philippine ambassador to the United States from 1998 to 2001 under President Joseph Estrada’s term.

He holds the distinction of being the only Filipino to have held five Cabinet positions.

In the 2013 elections, Maceda ran for senator but lost.

Maceda earned his bachelors of Laws degree, Cum Laude, from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1956. The former Senator holds a Doctorate in Education (honoris causa) from the Philippine Normal University and Doctorate in Public Administration (honoris causa) from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
