MANILA, Philippines - Veteran actor Mark Gil passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014 at 8 a.m. He was 52. His family confirmed in a statement that the actor died of liver cirrhosis.

Gil was diagnosed with cancer in 2012. His family told the media that they have decided to keep the illness secret.

In a statement sent to press, it says: "It was Ralph's request that this should not be revealed, and we did not question his decision. To those who have asked us about his condition, especially his colleagues, the press and fans, we apologize for not being forthright, but we also ask for understanding."

Mark Gil is the second child of singer Eddie Mesa and actress Rosemarie Gil. He was a sibling to Michael de Mesa and Cherie Gil, both movie and television stars.

According to the statement of his family, Gil died peacefully in the company of his family members and had been in high spirits during his last days.

The Eigenmanns announced that an event celebrating the life and work of Gil will be held on Wednesday, starting at 10 a.m., at the La Salle Greenhills chapel.

Gil became popular in showbiz for his role in the movie “Batch '81" and other movies which include “Underage,” “Indio,” “Miss X” and “Palabra de Honor."

Netizens on micro-blogging site Twitter were shocked over the news of the passing of the great actor in Philippine cinema. Colleagues, friends and fans took expressed their grief over the death of Mark Gil.


In a Facebook post, Sharon Cuneta said: “I just received news that Mark Gil passed away this morning ... As you all know, he was Cherie's brother, and a very talented actor. May God comfort his family during this time of mourning. My and my family's deepest condolences.”

Kapamilya star Maja Salvador, who worked with Gil on the ABS-CBN teleserye “The Legal Wife” said on her Instagram account: “My daddy Dante I will miss you.” Dante is the name of Gil's character on The Legal Wife.
