PAGASA raised Typhoon Agaton Storm Signal in 6 provinces of Mindanao | January 19, 2014

Manila, Philippines - The weather bureau PAGASA on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 5:00PM update raised Typhoon Agaton. public storm warning signal 1 in six (6) provinces of Mindanao: Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Compostella Valley.

Storm Warning Signal No. 1 signifies winds of 30-60 kph and is expected in at least 36 hours.

PAGASA said that Typhoon “AGATON” has slowed down while maintaining its strength.

At 4:00 PM today, the center of tropical depression “agaton” was estimated based on all available data at 215 km southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or at 220 km east of Davao City (7.1°n, 127.8°e).

Typhoon Agaton has maximum winds of 55 kph. It is forecast to move southwest at 5 kph.

Davao region and the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur will have rains with gusty winds with moderate to rough seas. Northern Mindanao and the rest of CARAGA will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. The rest of Mindanao will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Visayas, the regions of Cagayan Valley and Bicol and the provinces of aurora and Quezon will be cloudy with light rains. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and coming from the northeast to northwest over Mindanao. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough.

Tropical Depression “Agaton” is expected to be at 155 km southeast of Davao City tomorrow afternoon (January 20) and at 60 km southeast of gen. Santos city by Tuesday afternoon (January 21). By Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to be at 205 km southwest of General Santos City or out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility(PAR).

Estimated rainfall amount is from 5 – 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) is expected within the 300 km diameter of the tropical depression.

PAGASA informed that sea travel is risky over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and CARAGA region.

The public and the disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin.
