UST graduate in need of P500 for his university records returns bag containing P34,000

MANILA, Philippines - A Chemical Engineering graduate who was in need of money for his transcript of records (TOR) has restored our faith in humanity after he decided to return a bag containing P34,000.

Vince Luiz A. Cruz, who recently earned his degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Engineering needed to get his TOR as a requirement of the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC) for his upcoming board exam. Still unemployed and preparing for his board exam, Cruz was short of P500.

While inside the university’s main building, Cruz suddenly found a bag containing numerous P1,000 bills amounting to P34,000. While this presented an opportunity for Cruz to pay for his TOR, he decided to do the right thing and not let greed take over him.

“I could have just taken the 34,000 pesos and [buy] school supplies, a new cellphone, etc., but that was not UST taught me,” he told ABS-CBN News.

Immediately after discovering the bag, Cruz informed the security guard about it and entrusted the bag to Father Christopher Jeffrey L. Aytona.

That same night, the owner of the bag was able to recover his lost belonging. Apparently, the owner of the bag is a UST student who was about to pay for his tuition using the money inside the bag. Luckily, his bag fell into the right hands.

“Walang kulang sa pagtuturo ng katapatan, ngunit ang itinuro ay madaling malimutan sa panahon ng kagipitan. Si Vince ay isang mabuting halimbawa ng pagiging tapat, pagiging Kristiyano, pagiging Tomasino,” UST wrote on its Facebook page.

Because of his honesty, Cruz was rewarded with a certificate by the UST and even got his TOR for free.

“I might not be the most intelligent student UST could have but I always look forward to becoming a better person every day for my family, friends and especially in front of God. In our everyday life if you cannot make God happy, don't do it,” Cruz added.
