LTFRB fines Grab, Uber P5M each for numerous violations

MANILA, Philippines - On Tuesday, July 11, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) fined ride-sharing services Uber and Grab P5 million each for violating the terms of their accreditation.

According to LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra, the ride-hailing apps failed to screen vehicle operators, provide proof of car registration and allow the transfer of accreditation certificates prompting the regulators to fine them, instead of cancel their accreditation.

Delgra told Uber and Grab officials: “You are putting them at risk for illegally operating.”

Meanwhile, LTFRB board member Atty. Aileen Lizada said that the P5 million fine imposed on Uber and Grab is small as 28,000 colorum vehicles should be fined P120,000 each.

The Philippines, which is among the first countries in the world to regulate such services, has tightened rules governing Grab and Uber. Just this year, the LTFRB required vehicle owners to personally process their accreditation, instead of relying on the app-based firms. Moreover, the government agency also required Grab and Uber to present proof of vehicle registration within their respective mobile apps in order to get rid of colorum vehicles.

For Grab country manager Brian Cu, LTFRB’s decision was better than getting suspension or cancellation of their accreditation. Cu clarified that the P5 million fine will not be passed on to passengers and partner-drivers.

Musician John Lesaca files complaint against Uber, driver

Violinist John Lesaca has filed a complaint against Uber and driver Anie Agbayani before the LTFRB for the latter’s alleged rude behavior and dangerous manner of driving.

According to Lesaca, Agbayani caused undue stress to his daughter and wife, who are both suffering from cancer, after the driver made them walk the rest of the way to the hospital under the rain. Apparently, Agbayani did this so she can take a shortcut home.

“All oncologists will declare that stress will always be a contributory factor to cancers, and its possible remission. Getting wet under the rain will surely exacerbate their lowered immune system as well,” Lesaca wrote in his Facebook post.

Uber has since apologized and suspended Agbayani over the said incident.
