At least 14 passengers reportedly killed in Tanay bus accident

MANILA, Philippines - At least 14 lives were claimed by a vehicular accident that took place at Magnetic Hill, Peligrino Farm, Barangay Sampaloc in Tanay, Rizal on Monday, February 20 at around 8:40 am.

A tourist bus carrying more or less 50 students of Bestlink College in Novaliches was on its way to Sacramento Adventure Camp in Tanay when it suddenly hit an electric post. Ten students were declared dead on the spot, according to Bong Bati, administrative officer of Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Tanay, Rizal. Four others died in the hospital where they received treatment.


The remains of the victims were brought to San Isidro Funeral Homes.

Injured passengers as well as the driver were brought to nearby hospitals including 2nd Infantry Division Army Station Hospital, Tanay General Hospital, Tanay Community Hospital, Rizal Provincial Hospital and Amang Rodriguez Medical Center. Research and Planning Officer Berlin Flores said the driver is in a 50-50 condition.

According to reports, the driver of the bus with plate number TXS- 325 lost control of the bus when its breaks failed. The passengers were killed after the said vehicle crashed into a nearby tree and electric post.

Newbie driver

In DZMM News’ interview with Panda Coach Tours and Transport, Inc., it was revealed that the bus driver identified as Julian Lacorda had only been working with the bus company for three months but was previously employed as a driver by other bus companies.

The company’s reservation officer Jona Martires said that the bus had been in use for the past 13 years but had never been involved in accidents.

Martires told DZMM: “Ngayon lang nangyari sa amin ito. Di bale po ang sasakyan natin ang nasisiraan, 'wag lang 'yung may nawalan tayo [na tao].”
