MANILA, Philippines – While most women received flowers and chocolates on Valentine’s day, a man from Dagupan City, Pangasinan decided to give his girlfriend something unusual yet practical on the special day.

Man gives his girlfriend a sack of rice for Valentine’s Day

Instead of giving his girlfriend Sarah Grace Quinto an expensive bouquet of flowers or chocolates, Adrian Scott dela Cruz chose to give her a gift that would likely benefit her and perhaps her family more: a sack of rice.

Mahal ko, ito nalang regalo ko sayo kesa sa bulaklak ha? Idadaan ko nalang sa bahay ninyo ito ngaun. Sana magustuhan mo toh.😍 Happy Valentines day mahal ko! 😘😍 #BigasFebIbig

In a handwritten note that accompanied the sack of rice, Adrian wrote: “Maging praktikal na tayo ngayon. Dahil ang presyo ng bulaklak ay presyo na ng isang sakong bigas. Sana alagaan mo ang katawan mo.”

Many netizens were impressed by Adrian’s practicality particularly on a day filled with commercialism. Sarah, on the other hand, was more than impressed with Adrian’s one-of-a-kind present.

“Ikaw na talaga ang panalo sa araw na to at sa puso ko. Wushuuuu. Masyado mong ginalingan hands down. Salamat sa unli rice na binigay mo at sa unli tawa na pinaramdam mo sa akin ngayong araw ng pagibig. Happy Valentines Day Mahal! I love you #BigasFebIbig,” Sarah wrote on Facebook.

In the Philippines, a 25-kg sack of rice costs about P1,000, while a dozen Ecuadorian roses costs more than double at approximately P3,500 during Valentine’s day. Local roses are sold at about P1,200 per dozen. We couldn’t help but agree with Adrian as flowers will wilt after a few days but a sack of rice can feed a family of four for a month.

Shortly after it was posted, Adrian’s Facebook post has gone viral amassing over 62,000 shares and more than 66,000 reactions on Facebook.

Nowadays, more and more women prefer receiving non-traditional and practical presents on Valentine’s Day. Last month, Rico Villanueva surprised his girlfriend Annika Aguinaldo with a bouquet of chicken nuggets.
