Why Gloria Diaz called Maxine Medina a “saling pusa” in Miss Universe pageant

In her interview with ANC’s Headstart on Friday, January 27, the 65-year-old beauty queen named her top 5 bets to the 65th Miss Universe pageant. Although Diaz included Medina in her list of top contenders, she said the Pinay candidate would only be “saling pusa” or token candidate to the pageant.

"She cannot nga be the winner. She can be first runner-up. I hope I’m proven wrong for the first time in my life. I want her to win. I want us to be so proud, but you know, that’s life," Diaz said.

Diaz earlier told reporters that Medina has a “one in a million” chance of getting a back-to-back victory for the Philippines.

"We are the host. The host country cannot [win]. I cannot serve lechon and bring it back to my kitchen kasi I’m giving it to you," Diaz added.

Aside from Medina, Diaz named Miss Thailand, Miss Venezuela, Miss Dominican Republic as well as Miss China as her top picks. According to Diaz, Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell was also among her bets but commented that the beauty queen needs to lose some weight.

"If Canada could lose 8 pounds, I love her face. Am I right? She’s beautiful,” Diaz commented.

Maxine Medina under fire for saying Imelda Marcos “invented” the terno

In a video aired during the preliminary round of the Miss Universe competition held on Thursday, January 26, Medina wrongly said that former First Lady Imelda Marcos invented the terno.

"The terno was actually invented by our former first lady, Imelda Marcos. She invented these butterfly sleeves and they use it to cover their face,” Medina said.

However, according to Gino Gonzales, not a single person invented the terno as it was a “collective effort”.

"No one person invented it. It was a collective effort. The removal of the pañuelo, which is usually attributed to Valera, happened way, way before he removed it,” Gonzales said.
