VIDEO: UP Pep Squad performs “Thank U.Po” routine for fans

MANILA, Philippines - We won’t be seeing the University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad in this year’s UAAP Cheer Dance Competition, but the well-loved cheer dance group didn’t leave their fans heartbroken as they presented a whole new kind of performance during a pep rally on November 16 at the UP College of Human Kinetics.

UP Pep Squad performs “Thank U.Po” routine for fans

Aptly called “Thank U.Po” routine, the UP Pep Squad dedicated their performance to the UP community who supported them through the years and in their recent decision not to join the highly anticipated cheer dance contest.

Squad members wowed their fans as they danced, jumped, and tumbled to the music of The Dawn’s Salamat, Ebe Dancel, Sam Concepcion, and Gloc 9’s Ito ang Liga and Callalily’s Pasasalamat. Aside from their outstanding routines, the team mesmerized hundreds of their loyal fans with all-female group stunts and mixed group stunts, which the CDC will surely miss this year.

According to UP Pep Sqaud assistant coach Pio Opinaldo, the team decided to disregard their doubters and focus on people who value them

"The routine is designed for our true supporters. 'Yung mga sumusuporta, alam nila 'yung pinaglalaban namin. So, nagfo-focus kami sa mga taong 'yun. We treasure those people kasi we know na sila'yung kailangan namin," Opinaldo told ABS-CBN News.

The UP Pep Squad will represent the country in several international competitions including the Asian Cheerleading Competition to be held in Jakarta later this year. On the other hand, the UAAP CDC will be held this coming Saturday, November 19, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Known as one if not the most successful cheerleading team in UAAP history, the UP Pep Squad last brought home the title in 2012, the last of three straight titles. Meanwhile, the National University dominated the competition in the past 3 years.

Last month, the eight-time cheer dance titleholder announced that they will skip this year’s competition after they failed to reach an agreement with the competition’s organizer. In 2015, UP Pep Squad filed a protest after it placed third in the competition, lagging behind University of Santo Tomas and the National University.

“Reared in the institution we represent, we abide with our principles of honor and integrity, and stay true to our word of foregoing with the competition, should the same organizers be hired to handle the event again,” they said in their statement.
