Ronnie Dayan bares all about love, drugs and money

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Leila de Lima’s former driver and lover Ronnie Dayan has decided to break his silence during a House Probe on Thursday, November 24. The alleged bagman of the female Senator made explosive revelations about his affair with De Lima and transactions with Eastern Visayas drug lord Kerwin Espinosa.

“Wagas, dalisay, matatag”

During the Congressional inquiry on the suspected illegal drugs trade, Dayan revealed that his 7-year relationship with the former Human Rights Chair started in 2007 shortly after he was hired as a driver/aide in De Lima’s law firm.

House Deputy Speaker Fred Castro then asked if his love for the former Justice Secretary was pure.

"Ang iyo bang pag-ibig kay Senador De Lima ay wagas, dalisay at matatag?" Castro asked.

Dayan replied “Parang ganun na po.” However, he said that the kind of love he gave was not reciprocated.

“Yung pag-ibig kong wagas ay di niya sinuklian ng wagas din na pag-ibig,” Dayan added.

He also denied taking advantage of De Lima’s “frailties” as a woman.

In 2015, the couple’s relationship became rocky after Dayan heard rumours that De Lima was having an affair with another aide identified as Warren Cristobal. Dayan claimed that he slapped De Lima after finding out about the third party.

After taking some time off, Dayan was eventually asked by De Lima to resign.

De Lima to Dayan: Snub House probe

In his testimony, Dayan disclosed that De Lima urged him to go into hiding to avoid Congressional inquiry on the alleged narcotics trade.

According to Dayan, he asked his daughter Hannah to get in touch with De Lima since she was not responding to his text messages. De Lima reportedly instructed him to snub the House probe.

"Gustong-gusto ko pong attendan iyung hearing pero ang sabi ni Ma'am sa text niya sa aking anak na si Hannah Mae Dayan: 'Pakisabi sa kanya magtago lang siya... Papipiyestahan lang siya at silang dalawa kapag nag-appear siya sa hearing.’"

De Lima, according to House Majority Floor Leader Rudy Fariñas, could be charged for “obstruction of justice and contempt” for the alleged text messages.

No deals with Bilibid drug lords

Dayan denied organizing the narcotics trade inside Bilibid and claimed he did not receive drug payoffs from drug lords including Herbert Colanggo, Rodolfo Magleo, Renante Diaz and Jovencio Alben and Engelbert Acenas Durano.

Transactions with “Engineer” Kerwin

Dayan’s affidavit claimed that he transacted with Kerwin Espinosa, who he believed was just an engineer supporting De Lima, in 2014. He disclosed that he received money from Espinosa five times in August 2014, October 2014 and three times in November 2014 .

"Meron po akong natanggap na pera mula kay Kerwin Espinosa para kay Secretary De Lima. Mga five times po. Ang perang ibinigay sa ipinaabot sa akin, nasa paper bag na maliit, hindi ko na po binibilang at hindi na rin sinasabi ni Kerwin kung magkano yun,” Dayan said.

But contrary to his claims, Espinosa insisted that they first met in August 2015. The crime kingpin also said that he met with Dayan four times to hand over De Lima’s payola.

Despite his revelations, the House decided to grant Dayan immunity. This means that his statements during the House probe can’t be used against him in court.
