MANILA, Philippines - Due to inclement weather brought by Typhoon Karen (international name: Sarika), some local government units (LGUs) announced class suspensions for Monday, October 17, 2016.

As early as Sunday morning, Mayor Jamie Fresnedi of the city government of Muntinlupa declared suspension of classes.

The Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija also announced class suspensions upon the strong recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC). Work in all government offices is also suspended except those responsible for Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Operations where they are required to maintain skeletal forces in ther respective offices.

"The cancellation of classess and work in government offices is mainly due to the critical water levels and conditions of the Upper Pampanga river in the Laur Bongabon Gabaldon areas, the Santor River, Penaranda river and other tributaries at Talugtug and Cuyapo," the statement reads.

Based on automatic class suspension guideline, LGUs have the authority to declare local suspensions in areas where there is no storm signal.

PAGASA WEATHER BULLETIN

In the latest bulletin released by state weather bureau PAGASA, 'Bagyong Karen' has further weakened and is about to exit the landmass via Pangasinan. However, the estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 400 km diameter of the typhoon.

At 10:00 a.m. today, the eye of Typhoon Karen was located based on all available data in the vicinity of Bolinao, Pangasinan(16.3°N, 119.9°E).

PAGASA raised tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) Signal No. 2 (61-120 kph expected in 24 hours) over the areas of Pangasinan, Tarlac, Zambales and La Union.

Signal No. 1 is up in the following areas of Luzon: Ilocos Sur, Mt. province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Benguet, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Batangas and Nothern Quezon.

Meanwhile at 10 a.m. today, the Severe Tropical Storm with international name “HAIMA” was estimated at 1,615 km East of Visayas (10.1°N, 139.6°E). It is expected to enter the eastern boundary of the PAR tomorrow (Monday).
