MANILA, Philippines - An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from the U.S. has alleged some employees at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) of stealing some contents of her balikbayan box.
A report by GMA News revealed that almost six plastic bags containing expensive gifts were taken from the balikbayan box of Corazon Maquirang. She was already home when she discovered that the box has been tampered with the tape showing the seal of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the US.
However, after Maquirang contacted the TSA via email, the agency claimed that the box wasn’t opened by their inspectors. TSA explained that a notice of inspection should have been put on the box as proof that the contents were checked. A sticker with a bar code indicating the inspector is also supposedly pasted on the box.
“Nakakadismaya naman. Minsan ka na nga lang uuwi, magbabakasyon, tapos ganito pa mangyayari,” Maquirang told GMA News.

Maquirang believes that the TSA had nothing to do with the loss of her items and that some NAIA personnel were behind the act.
“Pineke ‘yan. Dito tinira ‘yan. Talagang hindi nagbabago ang NAIA na ‘yan,” Maquirang said.

Former NAIA employee speaks up
Meanwhile, a former NAIA employee claims that baggage loaders, custom employees, and some security guards are allegedly the culprits in such cases.
“Dati po ako nag trabaho dyn sa NIA...ang ma suggest ko po at yung mga tumitira po dyn ay yung mga loader po ng bagahe,ska yung sa custom kasi doon po nadaan ang bagahe,..yung sa loader pag mag unload sila o pag mag load ng bagahe pag apat cla ang ang mag ksama yung isa ang taga bukas ng bagahe at yung iba ang taga kuha yung iba nmn yun ang look out pag may security ksama cgurado kasabwat nila yun,..yan dapat tutukan nila..dapat dyn yung mga security guard na nka base sa ground at nsama sa loader sa taas ng bulk ng eroplano pati doon sa pag lagay nila sa conveyor hindi nadadala sa suhol kasi sa labas na nila hinahati yan..hanggat mayrung ganyan yan dyn sa NIA ganun pdin at may nawawala pdin sa bagahe ng mga pasahero,” a certain Ernie Pastrana commented on GMA News’ Facebook page.
