In the hit short soap opera parody 'Kalyeserye' (street series) being aired live within the "Juan for All," Alden Richards, who portrays a fictionalized version of himself, and Yaya Dub (real name Divina Ursula Bukbukova Smash) catched the attention of netizens and viewers on traditional media giving Eat Bulaga its 2015 highest rating of 39% or more than 3 times of close rival It's Showtime.

How the '#AlDub' craze started?

Alden first appeared as a host of Eat Bulaga!‍ 's various segments, such as the "That's My Bae" portion. Maine Mendoza, who got popularity on her Dubmash videos auditioned on Eat Bulaga and joined "Juan for All, All for Juan" cast in July 2015 as Yaya Dub, a nanny for comedian Wally Bayola's Lola Nidora character.

Mike Tuviera, resident director of the 36-year-old noontime variety show said that the AlDub tandem was made by accident. On its July 16, 2015 episode, the chemistry between the two sparked when Yaya Dub smiled upon seeing Alden on the show's live split screen.

The good reception received for AlDub loveteam pushed the Kalyeserye to the next level. The first of its kind on television, program's director Poochie Rivera described the parody as "natural and unscripted." KalyeSerye also features Jose Manalo (Frankie Arinoli and his various characters), Wally Bayola (as Lola Nidora and his various characters), Paolo Ballesteros (various characters) and other casts and characters.

AlDub story continues: The challenges in the hands of Lola Nidora

Lola Nidora is lobbying the pairing of Yaya Dub and Frankie (using the portmanteau "YaKie"). For some reasons, she is against the love affair of Alden and Yaya Dub.

The KalyeSerye's storyline main focus is the Cinderella-like forbidden courtship between the AlDub, with its paramount goal being the first physical meeting between the two, a move continually opposed by Lola Nidora.

One the of the highlights of the couple's near-encounters was in the wedding between the "YaKie" tandem but Maine collapsed due to fatigue hours prior to filming. Alden was supposed to finally meet Yaya Dub in person by stopping the wedding.

How #AlDub change viewing habit of Filipinos?

With the surge of ratings on noontime, no one can deny that Pinoys were hooked already to the story of forbidden courtship between the AlDub tandem. The show is also consistent on nationwide and worldwide trends on microblogging site Twitter with its record-breaking 5 million tweets on its September 5, 2015 episode.

Rivera shared a theory with the Inquirer: “AlDub clicked because lots of Filipinos can relate with their predicament. People who have partners who work abroad often communicate and pursue their relationship online, through Skype or Facetime.”

Indeed, it’s “a tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme,” with a decidedly modern twist that traverses old and new media and thrives in Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.", Anna Leah Sarabia, anthropologist and media critic said.

Vice Ganda, It's Showtime host in an interview with PEP on September 3 admitted there's still a healthy competition between the Kapamilya noontime show and Eat Bulaga which has the 'AlDub' fever.

“Bago pa naman nagka-AlDub, talagang may kumpetisyon na ang ABS at ang GMA. Hindi lang naman Showtime saka Eat Bulaga. Teleserye nila, kakumpitensiya ng teleserye namin… lahat. Kaya napakaipokrita, napakaipokrito na pagka sinabi ko, ‘Naku, walang kumpetisyon! May kumpetisyon ‘yan, and it’s a healthy competition,” Vice said.

WATCH: AlDub finally meet, but wait …

AlDub finally have their closest encounter on Eat Bulaga's "Bulaga Pa More" on Saturday, September 5 episode. But, it seems that there are just too many obstacles in the way of the lovers as Lola Nidora once again opposed them being together.

Lola Nidora gave her words of advice for the AlDub loveateam:

"Ang tunay na pag-ibig, kahit hindi kayo magkapiling nararamdaman. Ang tunay na pag-ibig, kahit hindi nagkikita, pinapahalagahan at iniisip ang isa't isa! Iniisip ang kabutihan! At hinihintay ang tamang panahon!"

The AlDub fairy-tale like story continues...

What's next for Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza?

As the Kapuso network has hit the jackpot with the onscreen love team of Alden and Maine, the management should strike the iron while it’s hot (the tandem’s surprise success means gold mine in business perspective). A sitcom or a rom-com would definitely satisfy the growing demands of fans to see the two together.

Reports circulate saying Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza have been tapped as additional member of Romcom-Min Mo Ako, Ai-Ai delas Alas and Vic Sotto’s Metro Manila Film festival (MMFF) 2015 entry. The plan is a well-kept secret that even Ai-Ai is neither denying nor confirming it.

What do you think will be the future of AlDub in showbiz? Will they maintain the spotlight?
