PAGASA releases Typhoon Mario weather update (September 19, 2014)

MANILA, Philippines - State weather bureau PAGASA in an update released on Friday as of 5:00am (September 19, 2014) said that Typhoon Mario has intensified and slowed down as it moves towards Northern Luzon.

At 4:00 am today, Typhoon Mario was estimated based on all available data at 212 km East of Casiguran, Aurora (16.1°N, 121.1°E). 'Mario' has maximum winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 22 kph.

Typhoon Mario is expected to be at 91 km North Northeast of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte by tomorrow morning (September 20) and at 195 km Northwest of Basco, Batanes by Sunday morning (September 21). By Monday morning, it is expected to be at 643 km North Northeast of Basco, Batanes or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

The provinces of Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan group of islands, Isabela, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Abra, Ilocos Norte and Apayao will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas.

The provinces of Aurora, Ifugao, Nueva Viscaya, Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Quirino, La Union and Batanes group of islands will have rains with gusty winds with moderate to rough seas.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be cloudy with moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northwest to southwest will prevail over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindano and coming from the northeast to northwest over the rest of Luzon. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough.

Public Storm Warning Signal 2 (Winds of 61-100 kph is expected in at least 24 hrs) was raised in Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Mt. Province, Abra and Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, Public Storm Warning Signal 1 (Winds of 30-60 kph is expected in at least 36 hours) declared in Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Batanes Group of Islands.

Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under signal #2 and #1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

The estimated rainfall amount is from 7 – 20 mm per hour (moderate - intense) within the 350 km diameter of the Tropical Storm.

The combined effect of Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and Typhoon Mario will bring moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the western seaboard of central Luzon, seaboards of southern Luzon and Visayas and eastern seaboard of Mindanao.
