FIBA World Cup 2014: Gilas Pilipinas vs Puerto Rico Game Results

The Philippine national men’s basketball team Gilas Pilipinas was not able to secure win against Puerto Rico squad in a do-or-die game, 77-73 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup on Wednesday night, September 3, 2014 (Philippine Time) at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes San Pablo in Seville, Spain.

Gilas Pilipinas has come painfully close to upsetting all three of its opponents Croatia, Greece and Argentina. But even as the team spirit #PUSO soared high today, the Filipinos failed to surpass the crucial World Cup Game.

If Gilas has accomplished the game today, the team will need to take out Senegal on Thursday (September 4) and have another team in the group lose twice in the final two games to have a chance at advancing.

Barea scored a layup with 51.8 seconds left to give Puerto Rico a 72-70 lead, then hit free throws in the endgame to seal the win and complete the comeback from a 14-point deficit.

Puerto Rico took the lead, 6-0 in the first quarter with couple misses from Gilas but Tenorio then sank 3 points. Blatche scored down low as the game tied at 13 with 4:09 remaining. The end of first quarter was the best for Gilas for having 12-point lead, 25-13.

The last time the Philippines competed in the FIBA World Cup was in 1978, when the tournament was held in Manila.
