OWWA announces Top 200 qualifiers of EDSP for SY 2014 - 2015

Manila, Philippines - Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) announced on Tuesday the top 200 qualifiers (complete list of passers) for Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) Exam for SY 2014-2015.

DEANNE ROCHELLE LONEZA ABDAO of the Philippine Science High School-Quezon City, National Capital Region, topped the OWWA EDSP exam given in September 2013.

In her report to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, Chairman of the OWWA Board of Trustees, OWWA Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon said that the top 200 examinees of the qualifying examinations that was administered by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute DOST-SEI last 22 September 2013 will be awarded scholarship by OWWA under its Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP). There were 4,476 dependents of member-OFWs who took the examinations, including the 334 dependents of member-OFWs from the Middle East. The examinations were conducted simultaneously in Manila, Batangas, Pangasinan, Cavite, Davao City, Laguna, NCR, Iligan City, Tagbilaran City, Naga City, Iligan City, Negros Occidental, Butuan City, Bataan, Riyadh and Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Secretary Baldoz congratulated the top qualifiers and looked forward to seeing them graduate with honors. She said that the number of awardees under the EDSP was increased this year to 200 after many years in pursuance to the directive of the board to give opportunities to more deserving dependents of OWWA members to take up courses in the field of science and technology where the “in-demand” jobs are. She added that she was pleased to note that 32 from the Middle East landed in the Top 20 and that the number of examinees from the region has increased every year.

Region 4-A ranked 1 with 49 top qualifiers, followed by 24 from the National Capital Region. The regional distribution for the rest were CAR,6; Region 1,4; Region 2,2; Region 3,16; Region 5, 7; Region 6, 19; Region 7, 12; Region 8,1; Region 9,1; Region 10, 9; Region 1l,12; Region 13, 3; and CARAGA, l.

According to Dimzon, OWWA scholars under this program are provided with a maximum education assistance of Php60,000.00 per school year, for bachelor degree courses in any college or university of their choice.

OWWA takes pride in its scholars who had finished their bachelor degrees with honors. In 2012, twenty-eight (28) scholars graduated with either Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude. In 2013, two graduated as summa cum laude, seven, magna cum laude and 20, cum laude. OWWA scholars landed in the Top 10 of licensure examinations held last year, specifically in Engineering, Accountancy, and Nursing. Warren Stanley Dalisay, an OWWA scholar who finished Medical Technology in UP Manila, made it to the West Point Academy last year.
