FIBA Asia 2013: Gilas Pilipinas vs Chinese Taipei Prelim Game Results

Manila, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas was defeated in a match between Chinese Taipei, 79-84, on Group A third-day of game for 2013 FIBA Asia Championship held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, August 3, 2013.

Gilas Pilipinas built a 68-55 lead after the third quarter but ran out of momentum in the fourth quarter, while Taiwan had the firepower in crunch time that allowed them to steal the win.

In an interview with Taiwan coach Hsu Chin-Che, he said: "We never gave up. We were down 13, but we found a way to win the game."

Smart Gilas had several chances to cut into the lead, but Jimmy Alapag missed a three-pointer, and Douthit and Jason Castro blew lay-ups.

Inspite of loss in the preliminary round, Gilas will still advance to the second round of tournament. Gilas defeated Saudi Arabia 78-66, on August 1 game and Jordan, 77-71, on August 2 to achieved 2-1 standing.

Next battle of Gilas is scheduled on August 5 in a rally against Japan (Second round).

2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Men is the intercontinental championship for basketball organized by FIBA Asia that serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. The tournament runs from August 1 to11 in Manila, Philippines.

Based on the rules of FIBA, host nation Philippines was qualified automatically in the game. Mall of Asia Arena was chosen as the main venue for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.
