Aquino announces official list of holidays for August 2013

President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday announced the list of official holidays (regular and non-working) for the month of August. Proclamation No. 629 declares August 9, 2013 as regular holiday in observance of the Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadan.

The Eid’l Fitr, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, the Sugar Feast is the culmination of month-long Ramadhan. The religious Eid is a single day and Muslims are not permitted to fast that day. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan.

Islamic theologians, among them graduates of the secular Al-Azzar University in Cairo, Egypt and Islamic universities in Libya, said Eid'l Fitr may possibly fall on August 8, if the new moon is sighted on Wednesday night next week (August 7). However, Aquino already declared August 9 as a national holiday in observance of the religious event.

August 9 which falls on Friday means a long weekend. Same with regular holiday on August 26 (Monday) for National Heroes’ Day.

Ninoy Aquino Day (August 21) which falls on Wednesday is a special non-working holiday.

The following are the official holidays in August 2013:
  • August 9 - Presidential Proclamation No 629, Eid’l Fitr  (Feast of Ramadhan)
  • August 21-      Special Non-working Holiday, Ninoy Aquino Day
  • August 26-      National Heroes Day
