SmartLTE wows foreign telco executives

Foreign delegates of the Asian Carriers’ Conference (ACC) held recently in Cebu were amazed by the blazing upload and download speeds of Smart LTE, one of the first commercial deployments of Long Term Evolution technology in Asia.

Delegates from telecommunications companies in the United States, Europe, and Asia performed speed tests at the Smart LTE booth in Shangri-La Mactan, which had Smart LTE clocking in at about 80 Mbps for downloads and 15 Mbps for uploads.

“This is great. The Internet connection is so fast,” said Gary Tan [in photo above] of Starhome, a mobile roaming solutions provider.

LTE is a two-year-old mobile technology capable of very fast data connectivity, surpassing download speeds currently available in 3G technology. Smart Communications, Inc. made the Philippines among the early adaptors of LTE worldwide when it commercially launched Smart LTE last August.

Other areas with commercial LTE deployments are the United States, Western Europe, and Japan.

Delegates like Tan watched YouTube videos to see for themselves just how fast Smart LTE is. Many of them – like officials from Lebanon-based carrier Protel in the photo below – expressed delight when their chosen high-definition videos streamed without buffering.

More than 1,000 telco officials from 45 countries attended this year’s ACC, which was organized by Smart, PLDT, and Sun Cellular. The conference provides a venue for leaders from the wholesale fixed and mobile telecom carriers to meet and engage with delegates from other players in the industry. Earlier this year, the ACC won the Best Telecommunications Conference award at the first Asian Conference Summit and Awards held in Singapore.

During the conference, Smart also announced that it has fired up LTE in the 2100 and 1800 MHz bands, making it the first multi-frequency LTE provider in the country.
